Snodgrass
When will this board learn that spending top dollar on players who are 29 or older, and therefore on the wane, is a bad idea that will cost them millions for little return?

Whereas scouting and buying promising young players, or nurturing our own promising young players, makes far better business sense.

Any sensible person could see that Snodgrass and Fonte were poor signings and both are now completely surplus to requirements and set to cost us a total of about £40m in transfer fees and wages.

WHY COULD THE BOARD NOT SEE THIS??

WHY?

Seriously, why?

Re: Snodgrass
Russ's comments are sound for the reason we bought Snod and Fonte. Hopefully we'll ship Snod out before end of August and Fonte will be replaced by Burke in January.

No disrespect but:

Zabaleta
Hart
Arnoutavic
Hernandez
(almost) Carvalho

Don't strike me as cowardly signings.

I agree Fonte and Snodgrass are slightly as they were signings with reduced risk. As it turned out they have not been great.

But it just shows how difficult it is to get signings to be a success unless of course you are shopping in the elite player aisle. Which we aren't.

Re: Snodgrass
Yes Russ's post is certainly sensible and so are the others that said we wanted solid Premier League pros to preserve our Premier League status.

Essentially, it means the overriding motivation behind the purchases of Snodgrass and Fonte was fear.

Fear of relegation is what drives most of the purchases made by this cowardly board. That is why we will always make short-term signings that never allow us to move forward as a squad or club. It's a shame.

Because it's quite clear that Burke would be a better bet at CB than Fonte at the moment.

Russ: your type makes me sick.

Coming on here with your sensible posts. There is no place for that on WHO.

Where is Steven P when you need him?

He would love this thread, quite interested to see his stats look now

You are missing the point. They were brought in when taking into account their current form as we were in the shit! Age and potential value were not of importance.

Re: Snodgrass
He was available. We were having a bad season. The board wanted proven, reliable pro's to solidy our PL status. We got him. It didn't work at well as hoped. But we stayed up. Now he may move on. If he doesn't then he is great squad player.

Life can be, and normally is, that simple.

There's no need to have a fucking breakdown over every little thing that doesn't quite work out.

Agree with the OP. It's the sort of thing where, if there was a Director of Football, I'd be calling for their head. Nobody of any competence should be getting in this position.

And then sadly you look at the Summer signings and they all fit the same mould. Which of them, in a few months time, will we be criticising for the very same reasons.

There is major incompetence at the club in what is arguably the most key area.

Has any other club signed and moved on the same players like we have over the past year.
Some serious recruitment issues

Re: Snodgrass
snodgrass was never going to be capable of being more than a squad player and that's IF he maintained decent form he showed at Hull.

Fonte cover for Ogbonna, but you have to ask if that was a wise deal considering the cost, his age, his wages.

Both reek of PANIC BUY, from a bipolar board, and a weirdo manager who couldn't spot a decent player if his hair depended on it.

I think most of us knew all this at the time, like we knew Caroll was going to get injured 2 games after the window shut and sakho wasn't going to be ready 'at the end of feb'.

Re: Snodgrass
Never heard of the phrase "a blend of youth and experience"?

It's worked well for us in the past.

Admittedly we may have been focussing a bit too much on the "experience" side of that recently, but then I think there have been a few promising younger players not living up to their potential, and we needed quick fixes. It may also be the case that management are still hopeful that some of the young players we already have will come good.

Re: Snodgrass
I think we only bought them, initially because Ogbonna needed an operation, therefore anonymous injury at CB meant we'd have been in trouble in that position, and not relying on Feghouli to fill the Payet void.

Remember we're not safe...if we had been top 7-8 at the time I doubt we would have bought them.

Maybe a loan CB at most.

It was a mix of not wanting furthur injuries and not being safe.

Since then we have only signed players with proven PL experience for the 1st team squad (Haksabanovic was bought for the future)

ironsofcanada 1:56 Fri Aug 18
Re: Snodgrass
I am sure someone had said this along the way but I would think he was signed to try to mitigate the loss of Payet's free kicks.

But I don't remember him getting very many chances for those or maybe I just blocked them out.

In fact you could argue it's more reflective on the state of West Ham, rather than either player.

Re: Snodgrass
Yeah. Actually quite an inexplicable loss of form for Snodgrass after joining us.

Fonte also came with a lot more pedigree than he probably showed, although personally I think he played ok for us. The guy was only a few months removed from winning the European Championship where they only conceeded five goals and playing in a good Southampton team.

It's safe to say both didn't perform as their recent form indicated they would. Hard to legislate for that.

Re: Snodgrass
I agree that Snodgrass and Fonte have had good careers and were in good form - the point is that they would only go downhill from there due to their age. And this has been proven.
